abc2 news sherrie johnson just left and they went south. she came back north to tell us more about their tour. g good morning, jamie. that's right. we caught up with the tour of duty this morning. they ran just past us headed wards washington, d.c. the first responders took to the road early august from california just to commemorate september 11 and those who lost their lives. you can see the video here. they had an escort which is great for safety. firefighters have come from all over the world. even as far as australia just to participate in this lune. the team hopes arrive in new york city on saturday for the 9th anniversary of the september 11 attack. the team is broken up into three groups. each group runs for six hours and then they recover for 12 hours and again, you can see the team, two of them running side by side on their way into dc and it's all in an effort to honor their fellow brothers and sisters who lost their lives on september 11. now it's important to note that the team is also raising money for a variety of charities as well. in the studio, sherrie johnson, ab

first officer, who had to use his patrol car door to fend off the suspect. >> there eventually was a struggle over the officer's weapon, at which time a second officer pulled out to the scene, observed what was going on, and shot the suspect in the chest two times. >> the officers involved are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. the suspect is at shock trauma in stable condition. elsewhere in the county, police have made an arrest in connection with a home invasion last month. 32-year-old lavar maurice rich was taken into custody. police say they were able to recover to numerous weapons that were stolen from the home, including a number of handguns and even a hand grenade. baltimore city police have juveniles and a custody in connection with a stabbing attack in the vicinity of penn station. the 37-year-old victim was attacked during an attempted robbery while he was walking on the 1500 block of st. paul st. fortunately, the injuries weren't non-life-threatening, and he is recovering at -- a hospital at or non-life- threatening, and he is recovering at h

to go to warsaw or someplace else. high tech companies use this for engineers and scientists. resort areas use it for a variety of reasons. you will be shocked to know, some years ago, here in the state of vermont, apparently we do not have people who can be ski instructors. did you know that? we just don't have enough people in the state of vermont who know anything about skiing and can instruct. therefore, correct me if i'm wrong, we have to bring people from all over the world to be sky skee instructors. those programs, those guest worker programs are often exploited by employers. why do they do that? they can bring people from abroad, young students -- students and pay them less than they would american workers. we fought that. we're making a little bit of progress in saying, especially in the middle of an -- of a recession, for example, exxonmobil needed welders and they brought in welders from india to do welding in the united states because obviously we don't have anybody in america capable of welding. totally absurd. so what we need is if a company really, really can't find s

were shot at 36th street and west street. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez joins us now from oakland with more on all this violence, jade. >> reporter: good morning. investigations are not unusual in oakland but last night the calls began rolling in. three shootings all within an hour as you minced. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd avenue where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. let's take a look at that video right there. while officers were helping that victim someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly streets. officers found a woman there. her finger had been shot off. paramedics rushed her to highland hospital. then decision patchers sent officers on their third shooting of the night. two victims were found in that shooting, a man and woman. their injuries were more severe, it appears they were sitting in their car when they were shot. both were rushed to highland hospital and surgery once they arrived. they are in critical condition. at this point these shootings don't seem to be connected but no inform

gunman and they are using everything, from police cars to helicopters. a woman who lived at the avalon apartments tells news 4 that at 7:20, a woman ran door to door screaming for help saying someone was trying to shoot her. soon after, police surrounded the avalon apartment. montgomery county police say she know who their suspect is. the search to get him in custody led to partially closing the streets. police have also closed nearby exits, 270. people who live inside the af r avalon have been told to stay on the inside. those outside are not being allowed back in. >> they keep saying there may be a gentlemen with a gun squr omee in one of the garages or buildings. i have to go to work. >> reporter: that garage is the center of the investigation which is still ongoing. we are told forensics will be coming out an trying to figure out what happened with possible gunshots fired. in the meantime, the search for the suspect is continuing. they have just released the apartment complex just now allowing folks to come back into the apartment complex and reopened roads here in this area. also,

impact on horse racing and animal lovers is being felt. jackie bensen joins us with more. >> reporter: when steve clark saw fire he did what many people do almost automatically these days, he pulled out his cell phone to take pictures. that phone record ad chaotic scene and heroic rescue. this couple were heading home when they saw fire. >> the horse barn is on fire. >> reporter: one barn was engulfed in flames which spread to a second barn and threatened a third. amber is a life long rider and horse lover. >> it was difficult. we're with unfamiliar horses that were scared doet. >> reporter: it was 4:00 a.m. and so dark rescuers used cell phones to see inside the third barn which was filling up with smoke. >> this whole thing is going to flash. we need to get out of here. >> any halters you can find. >> reporter: when the flames were extinguished fire officials announced the terrible toll, more than two dozen racehorses lost their lives. >> unfortunately, this fire had a big start on us. when we arrived we had fire blowing maybe 30 to 40 feet out of the roof of the barns.
